Fuck still getting used to DW codes. I MEAN: I velgarth doesn't allow fanfic, therefore shamelessly promoting the comm over there would be great trollfun, y/y?
I put in another couple myself because this is far far far too much fun! I admire the brevity of the Fandom Wank interests list - it's like a haiku - but I keep thinking of new terrible things that are relevant. I should really make an actual post or something lol, just not sure what about /brain fuzzy
You'll like the link in my most recent entry, btw - JW is in it, several times.
Fuck if I know. It's probably not even worth it, as there are only 8 members and one discussion post, with like 6 comments. But according to their profile, fanfic is ''theft of intellectual property'', so it kinda makes me want to do it just to annoy them. And here I thought the Livejournal LHM comm was stuffy and boring, jesus.
Apparently, they don't allow fic because Lackey said no fic? Except look what I found: apparently fic is okay now!. (Scroll all the way to the bottom.)
ikr, and it's not like Misty never wrote fanfiction herself evar--and according to someone (this is unverified so idk) she even still writes fic for City of Heroes.
So I don't think the no fic rule was because she disapproved of fic, she just couldn't ''allow'' it for legal purposes. But this was in the eighties and early nineties, times change, etc. but some people are still holding on to their fic snobbery, apparently. (intellectual theft, srsly?)
And really, it seems like it was her agent that recommended no fic, more than she didn't want any. And yeah, probably for legal reasons, but still. It's not like she went all GRAAAH about it like SOME authors I could name.
Yeah, but for all the Diana Gabaldons and George R.R. Martins, there are Naomi Noviks and Patrick Rothfusses. I am still tickled that Patrick wrote on his blog that he didn't feel like a real author until someone wrote slashfic of The Name Of The Wind--and then posted a link to what in all probablity was the very first Kvothe/Bast slashfic. XD
See, if I ever become a published author and have a fandom, I don't think I'll read fic, mostly because I know the things fandom does to characters. XD (Not that I'll mind slashfic, I plan to have plenty of canon slash, but just that, you know, woobification and the like.)
But I'll totally allow fic because seriously, where would I be without it?
I will totally have to read The Name of the Wind now.
fwiw I wallbanged The Name Of The Wind about halfway through and never picked it up again. There was a lot of really interesting worldbuilding but the story & characters hadn't grabbed me, so after it hit my domestic violence trigger in a pretty failzy way I didn't have the motivation to pick it up again. I've heard a lot of good of it from a lot of people but it didn't work out for me.
What I really don't get is them saying art is okay but not fic. /face.palm.
To be fair to Lackey she's been in an interesting position due to having inherited the legal rights to Darkover, which was the bomb site of the most notorious fanfic legal wank ever. Especially given the zillions of fannish injokes in the LHM (I was young enough to be tickled by it back when I realised what Vanyel's name means in Quenya, and it's not even the only LOTR reference there) and things that feel like obvious playing-around with slash fandom tropes, I never for a moment took Lackey seriously on the no-fic thing and I am kinda unimpressed by people who said wanky things in support of that position, few of whom have ever recanted or apologised. OH WELL LET'S MOVE ON AND POST PORN.
Short form: I PM'd the velgarth mod and they were all super-nice, and now the profile says this:
"2. Fanwork is acceptable. All fanwork that contains specific characters, races or places created by Mercedes Lackey needs to contain a copyright watermark."
So, now it's all fanwork, with a disclaimer, is allowed.
Ooh thanks, that is amazingly public-spirited of you. This being a small fandom, it would be a shame to have people think that fanworks weren't wanted even now it's a non-issue.

I actually just went over there and PM'd the mod, allati about the 'no fic' thing, because Lackey explicitly allowed fic in 2010.
Turns out what happens is that the original mod (who wrote the profile, rules and was the primary mod) up and vanished, deleting and purging the journal, and didn't tell allati. So, allati never changed the profile because they thought they couldn't, so the 'no fic allowed' thing sat there and rotted. allati thought that they were one of two mods at velgarth until my PM.
However, I PM'd allati and they were all super-nice, and now the profile says this:

So, it looks like it's now 'all fanwork, with a disclaimer' is allowed. Which is much nicer. :)
