...that is perhaps giving canon too much credit...at least to say, that writing him that way was intentional (I am a bitter cynical Valdemar fangirl at the moment, having reread Take a Thief and the Mage Storms recently and realizing just how much more godawful this series got after By The Sword. Have you read the new Valdemar books? I am in it for the lulz at this point, I can't rec them to you because you can't appreciate the terrible glory of badfic, which is precisely what they are, or rather could be, if anyone besides ML had written them.)
