I have never understood the point of throwing that in there--why does she get special foreknowledge of how she and Van are going to die? Or do all Companions get this knowledge right before they Choose? And again what is the point when canon repeatedly drives home the fact that the majority of Heralds die in the field?
But did Staven even have any Gifts other than mindspeaking Tylendel, and even then it's implied that he can do so only because of the mystical twin bond. My thinking here is that neither one of them really had what it took to be a Herald--come on, when Tylendel was on the verge of killing (or attempting to, rather) Savil--who was like a mother to him!--all because she said some mean things about Staven? I guess when it comes to mages, especially powerful mages, all the Companions agreed that they can't risk leaving any of them on the shelf, and just do their best to mold them into good self-sacrificing automatons after they Choose them.
