heh, there is that implication from Savil that Staven could have been Chosen but wasn't... What I am still wondering is why seemingly all Valdemaran mages get Chosen, because it's not like being a mage makes one naturally predisposed to be a decent person. Maybe Fandes couldn't risk leaving Van on the shelf.
